Bialogics provides SMIL with advanced imaging insights to accelerate Diagnostic Imaging operational performance, track and screen for immediate adherence to Radiology Additional Imaging improving patient care and decreasing medico-legal risks
Aurora, Ontario –June — 05, 2023 – Southwest Medical Imaging Ltd. (SMIL) of Scottsdale, Arizona, has teamed up with Bialogics Analytics to develop an analytics solution to ensure the scheduling of radiologist-recommended follow-up exams.
SMIL is a diagnostic imaging practice with 70 radiologists performing close to two million studies per year at 6 local hospitals and 19 SMIL-owned clinics in the Phoenix metro area.
Failure to carry out follow-up diagnostic imaging exams as recommended is a common occurrence that compromises patient care and exposes radiology practices and referring physicians to legal risk. Bialogics’ closed-loop follow-up exam module solves the problem by using natural language processing to extract nonstructured textual data referencing follow-up recommendations from radiologist reports and converting it into searchable data elements, allowing the scheduling coordinator to manage the follow-up patient throughout the process.
The system automatically sends queries to the RIS orders a few weeks prior to a recommended follow-up exam to confirm that it has been scheduled with automatic alerts to the referring office if it has been missed.
“It improves patient care because they’re being followed-up in a timely and effective manner,” said SMIL CEO Michael Douglas. “From a quality perspective, it helps us and our referring offices to not let things fall between the cracks, and from a marketing perspective, we are able to promote to insurance companies and referring offices about how thorough our follow-up process is and how it benefits patient care.”
Bialogics’ vendor-agnostic solution collects traditionally siloed healthcare data from multiple sources, including the RIS/PACS and EMR along with integration of data from radiologist reports, peer review and sub-specialty applications and Reading Value Unit lookup tables.
This allows SMIL to also employ Bialogics’ solution for a wide range of other productivity enhancing and operational uses, including radiologist workload management reporting.
“It balances the physician’s workload over a given day by taking into consideration sub- specialties, Reading Value Units and individual radiologist turnaround times,” said SMIL’s IT Director Andrew Braga. “It automates the whole process and gives our radiologists real-time, self-serve insights into their individual workload and the workload of their section through easily accessible dashboards.”
The solution is also able to select patient cohorts for research purposes, confirm the communication of critical findings to attending physicians for quality assurance and optimize workflow and equipment utilization at imaging sites.

AURORA, Ontario, May 11, 2023 (Newswire.com) – Radiology Imaging Associates (RIA) of Englewood, Colorado, a radiology practice with 125 physicians performing more than 1.5 million exams per year at 60 locations across Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Kansas and Hawaii, has acquired Bialogics Analytics Inc.’s DImax solution to optimize diagnostic imaging workflow and quality control reporting.
Bialogics’ unique, vendor-agnostic solution provides RIA with advanced analytics by incorporating data from multiple sources into one comprehensive reporting system.
RIA traditionally relied solely on data from its financial system to ensure the right number of radiologists by sub-specialty to meet service level agreements with the hospitals and clinics it serves but acquisition of the Bialogics’ DImax solution provides RIA with a timelier and much more accurate workflow analysis by incorporating data from all RIS/PACS systems as well as from its Physician scheduling software, Peer Review and Sub-Specialty applications and Reading Value Unit lookup tables. It also uses a natural language processing engine to extract data from radiologist reports and process nonstructured textual data into searchable structured data elements.
“The efficient management of our practice requires us to know the number of cases coming in and our capacity to read them,” explained RIA president Dr. Brendan Essary. “That’s more complicated than it sounds because we’re a sub-specialty practice providing 24/7 coverage over a large geographical region. The Bialogics Dimax solution can tell us, for example, if we need to add a slot on the weekend from noon to 7 p.m. It identifies bottlenecks, highlights opportunities to boost productivity, and allows us to tweak our scheduling software.”
Analyzing radiologist productivity based on the volume of studies and turnaround times alone can be deceiving because it doesn’t take into consideration a venue such as a hospital’s busy DI department, where interruptions are common. “One radiologist may read a lot less than another radiologist but is in a slot that isn’t productive,” said Dr. Essary. “By accessing data from our scheduling software, Bialogics gives us a more accurate workflow analysis that includes the productivity of both the slot and the radiologist.”
The Bialogics DImax solution also provides RIA with comprehensive quality assurance metrics on critical results reporting, follow-up studies, and turnaround times that it’s able to share with its customers.
“It’s great to sit down with a CEO and tell him we’re quality-focused, but if you don’t have any data or any specifics, what’s the point?” asked Dr. Essary. “At quarterly meetings with our clients, we go over critical results reporting, turnaround times, and a total of some 20 metrics to present a data-driven review of our performance.”
The quality assurance data on critical results reporting, for example, uses the natural language processing engine to confirm prompt communication of the result to an attending physician.
“We can track performance from the moment a patient requisition has been entered into the RIS,” said Bialogics president Jeff Vachon. “Every single message and procedural step is tracked across the radiology workflow, so we know how long the patient waited, who the tech was, their prep time, their scan time, the radiologist’s turnaround time, etc. If there’s a two-minute delay that can impact service-level agreements and penalize a radiation practice, that’s meaningful information our customers can use to optimize productivity and improve patient access to diagnostic imaging.”
The system can also be used to simplify cohort identification and accelerate data collection and correlation for research across clinical systems, specialties, and patient populations for research projects and AI analysis.

Press Release:
Aurora, Ontario, November 17, 2022
Bialogics is pleased to announce its new partnership with Medicom deepMed to leverage it’s DImax Business and Clinical Intelligence platform. This will automate the deepMed clinical context search process for the collecting and de-identifying of clinical information for research, machine learning, and AI applications.
From Requisition to Diagnosis to Research, Bialogics creates a closed loop Diagnostic Imaging ecosystem by integrating multiple sources of data into a single vendor agnostic platform to better document, measure, and analyze business performance, reimbursements, and clinical outcomes.
The final step in the Diagnostic Imaging data ecosystem is the protection of personal health information and preparing data appropriately for research, training, and the validation of AI algorithms. Finding the appropriate data can be difficult and time-consuming; preserving privacy and security standards for all diagnostic data used for research purposes is equally difficult. Medicom deepMed integrated with the Bialogics Dimax platform provides HIPAA compliant image anonymization, annotation tools and services to developers. In turn, this will work with radiologists in a wide array of clinical settings to prepare images for use in AI development, including:
- Data preparation
- DICOM Image de-identification
- Report Anonymization
- Extraction of image data sets for AI training or evaluation
As the utilization of AI in Diagnostic Imaging further evolves, the demand for complex data sets expands. Access to this data is integral to imaging research as it relies heavily on the ability to quickly and accurately identify exams that match specific clinical contexts, ultimately improving patient care. About Bialogics: Bialogics is a leader in the precision analysis of diagnostic imaging data and patient workflows, creating a real-time ecosystem for driving the accelerated use of clinical and operational data to improve business performance, and clinical outcomes
About Medicom: Medicom is a Healthtech company dedicated to creating innovative solutions for patients, health systems, and life sciences.
